Gamelan X
Since the word gamelan comes from the Javanese word game — meaning “to strike or hammer” — am I right to assume that the Bay Area’s own Funkadelic of ethnomusicology, Gamelan X, are the sound of hammering to the 10th power? It sure as hell sounds that way, judging by the trance-inducing rhythms pinballing between Balinese gongs, drums, and xylophones as this formidable primitive-futurist improvisational collective of epic proportions bashes out Indonesian marching music made for dance clubs yet to be conceived. Look at it this way: you could either stare at those four walls of yours to usher in Chinese New Year or give a wink to the Year of the Boar by joining Gamelan X in their quest for provocative new head spaces. Your choice.
